At Discovery Academy we recognise our obligations with regard to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural education of the pupils at our school.

These values are officially taught through the Religious Education (RE) and Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum and are further nurtured through our ethos and promotion of spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) understanding.  Our values have consideration for the following guidance:

  • Ofsted, School Inspection Handbook, 2015.
  • DfE, Improving the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of pupils, 2013.

We ensure that all staff are aware of the requirement to uphold British values and teachers and support staff ensure that their lessons are inclusive of, and sensitive to, the fundamental British values.

Pupils are expected to treat each other and staff with respect, in line with our Behaviour Policy.

Finally, in the classroom and during assemblies, we deliver a broad and balanced curriculum, in accordance with National Curriculum requirements, promoting the spiritual, moral and cultural development of pupils at every opportunity; preparing our pupils for the challenges, responsibilities and experiences that life may offer.

Delivered through a broad range of learning opportunities, teaching at our Academy gives children an understanding and appreciation of how different cultures shape our Academy, our local community and the country; the willingness to share and reflect upon their own and others’ faith, beliefs and values; opportunities to investigate moral and ethical issues without conflict, prejudice and bias; a context to use their developing social skills to work with others, regardless of gender, race or sexuality; the belief that they can make a positive contribution to the society in which they live.
